ASUP STRIKE UPDATE: AFTER 10 MONTHS ASUP PLANS TO EMBARK ON NATIONWIDE PROTEST

The Academic Staff Union of
Polytechnics (ASUP), on wednesday, said it had concluded plans to stage a nationwide protest over what it described as government’s insensitivity to its lingering strike.

The National President of the
union, Dr Chibuzo Asomugha, told newsmen in Abuja that the protest would take place on April 29. This is coming on the heels of Kebbi State chapter of the union’s decision on Tuesday to call off the 10-month old strike.

Asomugha said failure by the
Federal Government to meet the demands of ASUP and the
Colleges of Education AcademicvStaff Union (COEASU) and the consequent shutdown of the nation’s public polytechnics and colleges of education was
worrisome.
“In fact, we are planning for the protest on April 29 and if it
doesn’t come up on the 29th,
then it would be immediately
after May Day.
“We have been waiting for the
federal government. The strike should have been suspended about three weeks ago but wechaven’t heard from them.
“So, with this kind of development we do not even think there is any measure of sincerity on the part
of the government,’’ he said.

According to him, the strike has lingered and members are
beginning to give in to pressure.
“Ten months into the strike, some chapters are coming under pressure but there are provisions in our constitution to take care of such betrayals."

This is so sad, JAMB has come and gone some candidates that scored below 200 are worried to sit for polytechnic exams due to the present strike. When I'm being asked about my opinion in respect of this ASUP Strike, I'll tell them that FG doesn't f**king care about you guys.

HOW TO CHECK YOUR JAMB UTME 2014 RESULT

Following the release of the just concluded UTME result on thursday, JAMB officially released the statistics for the
UTME result. Which are well elucidated below:

According to the Registrar/ChiefExecutive of JAMB, Prof.
Dibu Ojerinde, a total of 47 candidates scored 250 and above, 24 in the Paper Pencil Test (PPT) and likewise 23 candidates in the Dual Based Test (DBT ) modes of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation
Examination (UTME) conducted across the country last Saturday.

The JAMB boss also disclosed that in PPT, 275,282 candidates scored below 150; 122,157 scored 150-159; 115,456 scored 160-169; 315,401 candidates scored 170-199 while 108,488
candidates scored 200-249.

According to him, “In DBT,
2,471 candidates scored below 150; 2,830 scored 150-159; 3,808 scored 160-169; 6,678 candidates also scored between 170-199 while 1,309 candidates scored 200-249.

“A total of 990,179 candidates
applied for PPT while 25,325
candidates applied for DBT which amounts to 1,015,504

number of applicants as
first choice as not less than
995,901 candidates choose
universities as their first choice of institution, 13, 761 candidates choose polytechnics as first choice; 20, 558 opted for colleges of
education while 32 candidates
choose innovative enterprise
institute as their first choice.

He said from the two modes
of exam conducted, there was a total of 36,164 invalid results, 2,494 results were with-held by the board for further scrutinising while 37,315 candidates were absent from the exams. He added that a total of 1, 865 centres were used for the conduct of PPT and 133 centres were used for DBT.

WORLD BANK SUPPORT LAGOS EKO SECONDARY SCHOOLS PROJECTS WITH $42M

The World Bank has pledged to support the Lagos Eko Secondary Schools project with $42 million to enhance the education sector in the state.

The World Bank's pledged was contained in a statement issued in Abuja.
It said that the new fund already approved by the bank's board was an additional amount to the existing loans to the state.

"The new IDA credit of over 42
million dollars to the Lagos EKO Secondary School Project is an addition to an original credit of $95 million. This systematically benefited over 620,000 students a year in 667 public secondary schools in Lagos State between 2009 and 2013.
"It will allow strong results to be sustained and evaluated in
hundreds of secondary schools and expand others," it said.

The World Bank said that the grant had also helped to increase the number of poor children accessing quality secondary education.
It also added that it helped
technical college graduates from low-income backgrounds to find well-paying jobs.

The World Bank said that the grant had further helped students to improve dramatically in Basic Education Certification Examination.

Student scores from beneficiary schools went up from 30 per cent to 70 per cent in English, 31 per cent to 45 per cent in Mathematics and 27 per cent to 65 per cent in Basic Sciences.

It said the results of the June 2013 West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate external examinations showed that 41 per cent of students from beneficiary schools passed with five credits and above compared with over 18 per cent before the project.

Commenting on the development, World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Marie Francoise Marie-Nelly, said the grant would provided
children from poor homes
opportunity to access quality
education.
"When students from poor families have the opportunity
to go to secondary school and
acquire sound knowledge and skills, they stand a fair chance of getting a good job or accessing economic opportunities later in life.
"This contributes to eliminating extreme poverty and boosting shared prosperity in furtherance of the World Bank's two main goals,"
she said.

FINALLY LASU AGREES TO REOPEN ON FEBRUARY 24TH [CHECK IT OUT]

Lagos State University (LASU) Senate has fixed Monday, February 24, to reopen the school, shut down  three weeks ago following students unrest.

After several hours of
deliberations of the Senate made up of Provosts, Deans and Directors, it was directed that the university be re-opened to allow final year students across all departments to sit for their 2012/2013 academic session second semester examinations.

COEASU STRIKE UPDATE: LECTURERS PLANS FOR PROTEST [MUST SEE]

Colleges of Education lecturers are planning to embark on hunger strike to further press on the Federal Government to attend to their demands.

They are also planning to mobilise other stakeholders to join them in protest marches in Abuja and other parts of the country.

No date, however, has been fixed for the two actions. The lecturers under the auspices of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union have been on strike since December 18. They are
protesting against:-
-Death of infrastructure in the nation’s colleges of education,
-Poor funding,
-Non-implementation of the 2010 FG-COEASU agreement,
-Poor conditions of service,
-Brain drain and illegal imposition of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System.

But in a statement by the COEASU National President, Mr. Emmanuel Asagha, and the General Secretary, Mr. Nuhu Ogirima, on Monday, the union said,
“The government’s insensitivity and discrimination are condemnable and it is an outright negation of the much-orchestrated
transformation agenda of
President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.”

The union alleged that the government’s uncaring attitude might be in connection with its perception that only the
children of the less-privileged attended colleges of education.

The association said it would no longer hold secret meetings with government representatives
"because several of such meetings have only revealed
unexpected compromised integrity of highly placed persons."

COEASU added,
"The National Assembly and
the Presidency have not shown the least concern. Leaders are discussing 2015 general elections and neglecting core values of the
system.
"This worrisome attitude
portends grave danger not just to the Nigerian youth who is being denied skills of survival, but to the entire nation.
This attitude is informed by the fact that students in colleges of education are sons and daughters of the peasants, the artisans, the downtrodden, and the less privileged.
"Hence, the inhuman
discrimination against them is akin only to South Africa of yore. The government’s attention to the universities where the children of the rich and powerful are schooling is evidently different."

The union also called on the government to release N30billion to address some of the pressing issues facing the sub-sector within 21 days.

It said,
“We are determined to resist all attempts by the so called non-stakeholders of the sector to frustrate the only hope of the less-privileged.”

POST ASUU STRIKE UPDATES: FG AND ASUU MIGHT CLASH AGAIN THIS YEAR [MUST SEE]

Students of public universities in Nigeria and their parents are yet to get over the more than five-month old strike suspended on December 17 last year by the Academic Staff Union of
Universities.

The union commenced the strike on July 1, 2013 because of the Federal Government’s failure to implement the 2009 agreement it reached with it.

It was thus disturbing last week when one of the union leaders raised the alarm that the FG was delaying in implementing the fresh agreement it made with the union in 2013. Some
stakeholders were particularly angered by the development considering the meetings, appeals and confrontations that took
place before the suspension of the 169 days strike.

The National Treasurer of ASUU, Dr. Ademola Aremu, said in Ibadan, Oyo State, that the FG was foot-dragging in the execution of the
Memorandum of Understanding on the NEEDS projects it signed with the union.
Aremu said the allocation of the funds claimed to have been lodged at the Central Bank of Nigeria for the execution of the NEEDs projects had not started two months after the suspension of the strike by the union.
He added that the FG should have commenced the process of depositing an extra N55bn for the first quarter based on the MoU signed with President Goodluck Jonathan.

At the meeting, Chairman, University of Ibadan chapter of the union, Dr. Olusegun
Ajiboye, also reportedly noted that students were yet to start
benefitting from the strike because of the FG’s delay in
implementing the agreement.
He also urged the FG not to further delay  in implementing its part of the MoU so as to forestall fresh crisis in the nation’s public
universities.

The Chairman, Enugu State University of Science and Technology branch of ASUU, Prof. Gabriel, Agu, who said he would not comment on the matter, however said the National Executive Committee of the union would meet to deliberate on some salient issues relating to the union.
He said, “We will wait for the outcome of our NEC meeting before making comment.”

The Education Rights Campaign however noted that it was not surprised at the alarm raised by ASUU. The
group said the situation showed what unions like the ASUU and Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics including Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union often suffer in the hands of the FG.

Lamenting that the union has consistently been a victim of FG’s insincerity, it advised it
to continue to expose the inadequacies of government towards public education.

According to it, the delayed implementation.of the MoU is another worrisome indication
that more crises are to be expected in the nation’s public
university system.
It added,
‘‘Regrettably, instead of increasing, allocation to education suffered a decline in the 2014 appropriation bill.
Therefore, even if funds are fully released for the
implementation of the MoU, in the long run, not much positive changes would occur in the universities because
of the decline in budgetary allocation.
Therefore, it is not only the MoU that ASUU.should agitate for, it should also fix its gaze at the 2014
appropriation bill with a view to mobilising for improvement in the provisions for education.
No one should be deceived.’’

NABTEB RELEASES 2013 EXAMINATION RESULTS [HOW TO CHECK YOURS]

The National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) has released the results of the 2013 November/December NBC/NTC and ANBC/ ANTC examinations held in the nation between October and November 2013.

Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of NABTEB, Dr Olatunde Aworanti, who announced the release of the results in Benin, said a total of
95,086 candidates enrolled for the examinations that were conducted in 2,092 centres a cross the country.

Dr Aworanti said 91,758 candidates, representing 96.5 per cent of the enrollment figure sat for the examinations, pointing out that the body recorded drop in malpractice from 7,449 in 2012 to 3,458 in the 2013 examinations.

He listed factors responsible for reduction in them malpractice figure to include the introduction of e-learning, intensive monitoring, involvement of educational stake holders in the monitoring of the board’s examinations and the use of biometric data capturing
system.

WAEC INTRODUCES NEW 39 SUBJECTS

WAEC has announced the
introduction of 39 new subjects in its examinations.

The Council’s Acting Head, Test Development Division, Mrs.Olayinka Ajibade, who announced this, said the new subjects would commence in this year’s May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination.

Ajibade said this while
delivering a paper titled “The New Senior Secondary Education Curriculum in
Nigeria; Implications for
Assessment”  at the council’s monthly seminar in Lagos on Friday.

The NERDC is the body responsible for reviewing primary and secondary schools’ curricula in the country.

“Each WASSCE syllabus is derived from the senior secondary education
curriculum. In addition to the 39 new subjects for which NERDC engaged in curriculum development, curriculum
review was also carried out for 35 existing subjects.”

In the new curriculum, four new subjects that are listed below-
√ Computer Studies,
√ Insurance,
√ Store Management and Office Practice- are in the electives category, while the remaining 35 subjects are in the Trades category.

Among subjects in the trade category are:
√ Painting and Decorating,
√ Photography,
√ Salesmanship,
√ Plumbing and Pipe Fitting,and
√ Upholstery.

Ajibade added that under the fresh directive, students would be required to take four core subjects, comprising English Language, General Mathematics, Civic Education and Trade/ Entrepreneurial Studies.

The candidates, she added, would be required to choose 3 or 4 subjects from
√ Humanities,
√ Science,
√ Technology and
√ Business Studies depending on their potential and interest.

Ajibade, while unveiling this noted however that the new directive would face some challenges.
She identified in adequate
teachers, appalling state of facilities in schools and large class size as some of the challenges that would likely beset the initiative.

ASUP STRIKE UPDATE: WHAT IS THE LATEST NEWS ABOUT CALLING-OFF THE STRIKE? [MUST SEE]

The meeting between the Federal Government and the leadership of polytechnic lecturers, ASUP, went rowdy on Tuesday amidst various accusations.

The meeting was called by the federal government to resolve the 3-month-old strike embarked upon by ASUP nationwide.

The government’s delegation
to the meeting, held at the federal secretariat in Abuja,
is led by the Education Minister, Nyesom Wike, while ASUP is led by its president,
Chibuzor Asamogu.

The meeting went rowdy when the leadership of the National Association of Polytechnic Students, NAPS,invited as observers to the meeting, accused the lecturers of fighting for selfish interests.

The ASUP representatives fumed and accused the federal government of inviting students to such meeting in order to harass lecturers.
The NAPS president, Ogbonnaya Sunday, however, also accused the government of insensitivity to the plight of students.

As the meeting got rowdy and a shouting match ensued at about 1:15 p.m., journalists were walked out of the venue and the meeting continued.

ASUP has been on strike
since October demanding among others, proper funding of polytechnics, and an end to discrimination of polytechnic graduates in the labour market.

SHOCKING: VC OF LASU STONED BY RIOTING STUDENTS DUE TO EXAMS [SEE PHOTOS]

There has been chaos at the Lagos State University Campus, Ojo since yesterday after students of the institution and school authorities clashed over the closure of the university’s registration portal.

Students went on rampage this morning, destroying properties and disrupting exams schedule to hold today after their Vice Chancellor Prof. John Obafunwa refused to re-open the registration portal for 1292 students left to register for the current 2nd semester examinations which starts today because they couldn’t raise the new N250,000 school fees on
time.

Students gathered for over 9 hours in front of the senate building of the school yesterday 22nd of Jan. where the VC had a meeting concerning the re-opening of the portal but apparently the meeting didn’t yield anything positive as the portal wasn’t re-opened.

According to the students, only 708 were able to register before the portal was shut again leaving 1292 students to their fate.

The VC reportedly said students yet to register are insignificant and would automatically have to carry the session over. This
statement led to the riot today.

Students who went into the exam hall this morning were injured by protesting fellow students while exam papers and cards were destroyed.
The VC wasn’t spared also as
his car was destroyed by rioting students who are insisting that the portal must re-open before examinations can commence in the school.

The school authorities invited over 100 riot police to calm the situation down.

Reports reaching us also confirms that due to the riot that took place today, the school (LASU) has been closed down till further notice.

BEWARE OF FAKE JAMB/UTME CARDS [MUST SEE]

The Joint Admissions and
Matriculation Board {JAMB} on Monday alerted the public on reports of fake Unified Tertiary Matriculation
Examination {UTME} e-facility cards in circulation in Lagos.

Everybody is looking for a means to get money either legitimate or illegitimate

The Coordinator of the Board in Lagos, Kamaldeen Oladeji, said this in the state.
Mr. Oladeji said that the
board’s annex in Lagos had
been informed that some
persons were selling fake e-facility cards for the board’s 2014 UTME.
“I want to seize this opportunity to sensitise the
public of this ugly development. Some candidates have reported the purchase of fake e-facility cards to the JAMB National
Headquarters Annex at No. 11, Ojora Road, Ikoyi,
Lagos. The candidates said they bought the fake e-facility cards from vendors at the Lagos State University (LASU) and around Ikotun and Sango
Ota.”

The Unified Tertiary
Matriculation Examination,
UTME, e-facility cards presents candidates with the PIN to gain access to their original UTME result slip and JAMB admission letter.

Mr. Oladeji said candidates
complained that the fake e-
facility cards were being sold at a price higher than the quoted purchase price of N1,000.

He warned that any vendor
found selling the e-facility cards outside the board’s offices nation wide would face the wrath of the
law.

Mr. Oladeji added that the e-facility card was only available for sale to the public at the board’s offices nation wide.

ASUU STRIKE TO BE RECALLED IN LASU VERY SOON [SEE FULL DETAILS]

The Academic Staff Union of
Universities (ASUU), Lagos
State University (LASU)
chapter, said on Monday it
will call for strike if the
university management does
not meet their demands.

It said the motion for the
strike will be decided at their
congress slated for early
January, if no tangible
progress is made. This was
disclosed by the Chairman of
ASUU-LASU, Dr. Adekunle
Idris, at a press conference
held at the university
campus.

Idris said the national body
of ASUU is aware that the
issue had been there before
the national strike commenced on July 1. He
accused the university
management of not being
sensitive to the situation on
campus, saying
"at all press contacts during the national strike, it always impressed on stakeholders to intervene so that students can enjoy uninterrupted school calendar after the struggle, which they fail to do.
On the demands" he said.

"The governing council must
implement the universities
(Miscellaneous provisions)
amendment act 2012, passed
by the Federal Government,
for the effective running of
universities, which the Lagos
State Government had agreed
to implement.

Other demands are the
immediate regularization of
appointment of academic
staff currently on temporary
appointment and recall of all
academic staff on temporary
appointment who were
disengaged unjustly" he added.

My advice is that please don't kill discourage our morale to learn with all these strike here and there. Consequently, ASUP is still on strike!
